Verapy Therapy – A Case Study

We had the pleasure of working with  Verapy  in the last few years as  a play consultant and development partner  to build their Virtual Reality Platform to help kids complete physical therapy exercises through games.

About Verapy

Verapy platform is a game-changer in creating full flexibility of the rehabilitation process for the therapist. The software ensures full engagement and transparency between patients and therapist throughout the entire cycle of the therapy. Verapy changes how physical and occupational therapy is delivered by turning standard exercises into fun and engaging virtual reality games. 

The Problem

In physical therapy, the two core problems that we focused on with Verapy are Patient Retention and Patient Engagement.
During a therapy session, patient engagement with children is a big challenge for occupational therapists in focusing on their patient’s health because they are simultaneously tasked with keeping the children entertained and receptive to their exercise. 
Patient Dropout is a huge problem in this space, physical therapy outpatient care centers in the US lose $6 billion a year from patients not completing their treatment plans. 70% of patients are non-compliant and 20% of patients drop off after their 3rd clinical visit.  

Solution

Verapy changes how physical and occupational therapy is delivered by turning standard exercises into fun and engaging virtual reality games. 
We met with the Verapy Co-Founders Jon and Tad, they had a prototype of their gameplay experience, simulating a basic shoulder and elbow flexion and extension. They came to us with the challenge of building out additional games that simulated different exercise experiences. 
Through a series of meetings and design iterations, we identified a few key challenges beyond the scope of developing additional games that we committed to designing solutions for an overall greater patient experience with Verapy.
We set out to:
  • Create engaging games with high replayability and for long-term retention
  • Add ability to capture data to display statistics to therapists for their records and increase accuracy of data tracking 
  • Simplify UX throughout the application and add a second screen view which would give therapists an easy way to assist kids who were in VR
  • Revamp platform framework to make it easily scalable to add multiple games within a unified ecosystem


Process

First we went through what we like to call a “Play Audit” and analyzed the platform in terms of UX, UI, and game design. We worked with Verapy to create new user flows, wireframes, mockups and more to demonstrate what an updated version of the platform could be.
After approvals we started rapid prototyping to demonstrate on a technical level how everything could work. Going from the original demo to a clinic-ready experience in under 6 months, we iterated through many prototypes of gameplay, software, and hardware solutions including:
  • Variety of gameplay concepts
  • Input systems
  • Variety of exercise and range of motion types, per body part
  • Data-tracking systems
  • “Second screen” VR streaming

Game Design 

Our goal was to create a self-guided user experience that took a few clicks for therapists to get kids started and into the games. We also designed and created a custom axis puppet for the games so we could collect accurate data and create games within a set framework. This made it quick for us to implement and get games set up across multiple exercise types. Through this framework we designed and built six games that worked with 21 different exercises! Final Experience

conclusion 

Our goal was to design and create a platform with a system that maintained the magic Circle for both patients and the therapists to engage in a more meaningful way, with minimal friction. We’re happy to share that we did just that, therapists expressed much love for the platform along with the kids.

We achieved the following goals:
  • Long term patient retention and short term patient engagement
  • Plug and play accessibility for therapists 
  • Data driven tools that feed up the therapist to have a more empathic assessment of their patients
