Artificial Intelligence: 5 Key Historical Figures
Marco Santana • Dec 25, 2023

Artificial intelligence history goes back several decades, even though its impact on modern technology has accelerated quickly in the last several years.

As we look forward to the next developments in the industry, we wanted to look back on some of the key figureheads in the industry.

Their discoveries, documentation, and work have worked together to paint a great base for the industry.

So, here are five key figures in the history of artificial intelligence:

Geoffrey Hinton (Born Dec. 6, 1947): Geoffrey Hinton is a British-Canadian computer scientist and cognitive scientist who is known for his work on deep learning. He is a co-founder of the Neural Network Research Group at the University of Toronto and the winner of the 2012 Turing Award.

Alan Turing (June 23, 1912 – June 7, 1954): Alan Turing is considered to be the father of artificial intelligence. He was a British mathematician and computer scientist who developed the Turing test, a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.

John McCarthy (Sept. 4, 1927 – Oct. 24, 2011): John McCarthy is an American computer scientist who coined the term "artificial intelligence" in 1955. He is also known for developing the Lisp programming language, which is one of the oldest and most widely used programming languages for artificial intelligence.

Allen Newell (March 19, 1927 – July 19, 1992) and Herbert A. Simon (June 15, 1916 – Feb. 9, 2001): Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon were American computer scientists who developed the Logic Theorist, one of the first programs that could prove mathematical theorems. They are also known for developing the General Problem Solver, a general-purpose problem-solving algorithm.

Marvin Minsky (Aug. 9, 1927 – Jan. 24, 2016): Marvin Minsky is an American cognitive scientist and computer scientist known for his work on artificial intelligence and robotics. He is the co-founder of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the author of several books on artificial intelligence, including "The Society of Mind."

These are just a few of the many key figures in the history of artificial intelligence. Their work has laid the foundation for the development of artificial intelligence as we know it today.
