NHL Playoffs: How Tech Has Changed Hockey
Marco Santana • May 06, 2024

As NHL fans enjoy the intensity of playoff hockey, it likely comes as no surprise that the league and its players have been using technology to enhance their experiences.

Did you know, for instance, that some of the ever-present Zamboni machines (the bulky vehicles that run across the ice between periods to ensure each begins with a pristine skating surface) are embedded with GPS and lasers that guarantee a perfectly level playing surface?

See. Told you. Technology is everywhere.

Sports technology has certainly come a long way so let's dig into the NHL this week as they move into their second round of playoffs.

Sports and Technology - Improved Equipment:

  • Stick Design: Few pieces of equipment have more personal meaning than a hockey player's stick. It's similar to a baseball player's bat in that they customize them to meet their specific dimensions.

  • That means advanced materials, specific aerodynamics, and precision engineering to create lighter sticks with better control, power, and accuracy. You know those slick moves you see near the end of SportsCenter? Many are possible thanks to customization that allows players to execute intricate moves and powerful shots with more finesse.

  • Protective Gear: It used to be that goalkeepers could show off their personalities by creating helmets themed around their team's mascot or perhaps a nickname.

  • Today, advancements in materials and design have led to lighter, more breathable padding that offers better protection without sacrificing mobility. The new capabilities allow players to perform at peak and minimize injury risk.

Sports and Technology - Training and Performance Analysis:

  • Wearable Technology: Like many other industries, hockey is in an information renaissance thanks to emerging technology like lightweight and barely detectable sensors.

  • These sensors track player movement, heart rate, and other metrics, leading to data that experts can track, manipulate, and download to assess performance, identify areas for improvement, and personalize training regimens for each player. It's pretty sick.

  • Video Analysis: Not only do high-definition cameras allow the presentation to thrive. The cameras and video software allow players and coaches to analyze game footage meticulously.

  • Players can see their mistakes and successes in detail, and coaches can develop targeted strategies based on opponent weaknesses. It's a capability combined with much-improved skills testing that ramped up the sport's popularity in 2024.

Sports and Technology - Enhanced Game Environment:

  • Real-time Communication: Wireless headsets have become synonymous with sports and it has allowed coaches to communicate directly with players on the ice, in real-time.

  • This allows instant feedback, strategy adjustments, and play instructions during the game. It means adaptation to changing game dynamics which, as we all know, is what sports is all about.

  • Puck and Player Tracking: Embedded sensors in pucks and jerseys provide real-time data on player positioning, speed, and shot location.

  • This data can be used for instant replays, in-game analysis, and officiating decisions.
